Formed within a volcanic cone, Hanauma Bay is one of the most popular attractions of Honolulu. “Hana” is the Hawaiian word for “Bay” and “Uma” refers to the curves of the indigenous canoes. If you love marine life and coral reef, it is the best place to snorkel on the island of Oahu. Moreover, its beach was voted as the best in the United States in 2016!We’ve been to countless beaches across countries and seeing Hanauma Bay from above didn’t really excite us that much to spend on the entry fees for it (read notes), so we just loitered around and gave it a miss. I made sure to capture it from the top, though.Notes:
- Park is open every day except Tuesday from 6am to 6pm. The charge for parking is flat at $1.
- There is a fee to enter the bay – $7.50 and free for those under 12 yrs.
- The entry fee does not include the snorkel fee, which is $20 for standard snorkel set.
- If you are staying at one of the hotels at the Waikiki, you can reserve the shuttle to Hanauma Bay at $2.5 per way and it takes about 45 minutes.
- For more info, visit their site here.
You are right that the beach is not that outstanding. While it is scenic one will surely contemplate whether it is worth entry fee or not.

No point in paying the entry fees if we just had to go to the beach (and not snorkel). We’ve seen many better ones in life anyway 😀

Yes, that’s one thing we absolutely loved in Hawaii!

I can see why it has been voted as the best beach in the USA. Do you know where the amazing colour of the water comes from? Great photos, Alok!

Thanks, Sir.
The color is a result of many factors – primarily the light absorption and reflection pattern and what particles are in there (mainly for near-shore). Please add anything else?

Probably the first time I’ve ever heard of a beach having an entry fee…learn something new everyday!

Yeah, we’ve hardly paid entry fees for such attractions. I guess since it a highly preserved site, so they have that.

Beaches that are sites for snorkelling always pique my interest. Though I agree, that the entry fee can be quite a deterrent especially when you’ve been to (as is your case) so many exotic beaches worldwide.

I haven’t snorkeled yet, so maybe one day my perception might change 😊

Alok ji , I just want to know why the color of some lakes looks green or Blue . Undoubtedly write up and pictures are brilliant as usual !!

Thanks Yogi ji. The color primarily depends on how deep and clear the water is. It also is a factor of absorption of colors by water and its reflective properties.

So you climb up those stairs and then see the bay as you get to the top, is it? That must have been quite a sight. 🙂
